Salem State Baseball Sweeps Doubleheader from Framingham State

SALEM Joe White (Bellingham, MA) led the Vikings of Salem State with a combined four RBI’s in a day-time doubleheader sweep over the Rams of Framingham State on Thursday afternoon. The Vikings won 2-1 and 5-3 to improve to 11-1 in the Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference and 18-16-1 on the year. Framingham State fell to 10-23 on the season and 5-7 in the MASCAC.

Game One
With the help of his fielders, Salem State’s Matt Abrain (Northbridge, MA) retired the first 12 batters he faced, recording five strikeouts in the process. The Vikings’ offense gave Abrain the luxury of working with a 1-0 lead when White drove in Richard Fecteau (Newbury, MA) who reached on an error in the first.

Kyle Dembrowski (Natick, MA) broke up Abrain’s no-hitter in the fifth inning with a bloop single that dropped right in front of centerfielder Andrew Deloury (Peabody, MA). However, Abrain escaped the inning unharmed as he struck out RC Goodman (Springfield, MA) and forced Kyle Lippert (Carlsbad, CA) to groundout to second base.

In the sixth, the Rams finally reached the scoreboard as Jon Chapman (Waltham, MA) hit a long sacrifice fly to right field that brought in RJ Gray (Lowell, MA). Some controversy arose when Gray reached second on a fielder’s choice as he obstructed Salem State shortstop Mac Daniel Singleton(Everett, MA) by not sliding into the bag. Despite the obstruction, Gray was safe at second. In the bottom half of the inning, Salem State regained the lead with a sacrifice fly of their own from Alex Toomey (Beverly, MA) that scored Jose Cedano (Lawrence, MA). Abrain surrendered one hit in the final inning, but closed the deal to secure the 2-1 victory.

Abrain (1-2) flirted with a no-hitter through five innings, striking out eight batters while allowing only three hits. Manny Powers (Malden, MA) also went the full game for the Rams as he allowed three hits and no earned runs despite Salem State crossing the plate twice.

Game Two
The Vikings jumped on Framingham State starter Zack Kirby (Rochester, MA) early as White scored Davis with a double off the left field wall. Two batters later, Cedano drove in

White with an RBI-single to center that put Salem State up 2-0. The Vikings added to their lead in the third inning when White brought in two more runs with another double down the left field line that scored Davis and Fecteau for a 4-0 advantage.

After a scoreless fourth, Salem State enhanced their lead to 5-0 when Cedano hit an RBI-single that brought White across the plate. The Rams got the bats going in the sixth when they knocked back-to-back singles off Salem State’s Mike Richardson (Belmont, MA) to lead off the inning. Powers drove in their first run of game two with an RBI-fielder’s choice that scored Ryan Connelly (West Roxbury, MA). Powers did however reach base due to a fielding error on Singleton at short. Framingham State wasn’t done scoring in
the sixth as Ryan Wardwell (Hudson, MA) drove in two runs with a double that cut the Vikings’ advantage to 5-3. Despite the Rams late efforts, Salem State closer Pete Gonski (East Lyme, CT) retired the final six batters to earn the 5-3 victory.

White had a great game as he went 3-for-3 with three RBI’s and two runs scored. Cedano added two RBI’s in the sweep.

Richardson (3-2) earned the win as he went 5.1 innings while striking out four Rams. Gonski finished the final 1.2 innings allowing no hits with one walk. Kirby (2-5) went the distance for Framingham State as he surrendered four earned runs off eight hits.

Salem State’s next opponent is the Falcons of Fitchburg State where they will travel for another afternoon doubleheader beginning at noon on April 30th. The Rams will make up a game tomorrow, April 29th, when they travel to Lasell College for a game starting at 7:00 p.m.

Salem State Softball Spits Doubleheader

Salem, Mass. – Salem State and Framingham State each notched a victory in a MASCAC doubleheader on Thursday afternoon at Alumni Field. In game one, the Rams used a six-run first and starter Natasha Arseneau (Waltham, Mass.) went six innings and allowed just two runs as Framingham State won 7-2. In game two, Desiree Moreno (Ashburnham, Mass.) hit  a two-run single in the bottom of the sixth to propel the Vikings to a 5-2 victory.  Salem State goes to 11-19 on the year and 6-6 in the MASCAC. The Rams are now 13-23, and 5-7 in conference.

Game 1
Framingham State jumped on top of the Vikings in the first inning as the first eight batters reached base. Dayna Marchant (East Bridgewater, Mass.), who had a triple and double in the inning, led off the game with a shot into the right-center field gap. After a walk, Tiffanie Marsh (Tewksbury, Mass.) singled in the first two runs of the game. A double by Anna Dziok (Southampton, Mass.) put runners on second and third and a wild pitch scored the third run of the inning. Megan Dowining (Hanson, Mass.) then provided the big blow with a two-run home run to deep left that put the Rams up 5-0. Starter Rachael Cyr (Amesbury, Mass.) did not record an out as she was relieved by Meghan Black(Winchendon, Mass.). Cyr was charged with five runs on four hits.  Rachael Desrochers (Westford,  Mass.) added an RBI single that made the score 6-0 after one inning of play.

The Rams made it 7-0 in the third as Marchant added an RBI on a fielder’s choice. The Vikings added single runs in the fifth and sixth innings that made the score 7-2. Jen Crovo (Melrose, Mass.) contributed and RBI single and Chloe Manousos (Lowell, Mass.) doubled into the gap in right-center to drive in Dahlia DeCologero (Woburn, Mass.).

Black allowed two runs (one earned) in seven innings of work for Salem State. Jessica Pietersen (Norton, Mass.) pitched an inning of scoreless relief for Framingham State.  Arseneau earned the win, scattering seven hits with three strikeouts.

Game 2
The Rams once again went up early in the first inning as Dziok plated two runs with a double. The Vikings tied the game in the bottom of the third as Jess Raymond (Peabody, Mass.) knocked in Crovo with a base hit and after consecutive steals by Raymond, Marisa Sanchez (Framingham, Mass.) produced an RBI with a fielder’s choice. Game one starter Arseneau relieved Pietersen, who allowed two runs on three hits, in the third inning. Meanwhile, Vikings’ starter IIeish Burney (Bristol, Conn.) settled in retiring the Rams in order in the fourth through sixth innings. In the bottom of the sixth, following a walk and single, DeCologero broke the tie with an RBI double. One out later, Moreno gave Salem State some breathing room with a two-run single to make the score 5-2.

Despite giving up a one-out single in the seventh, Burney retired the Rams to secure her eighth victory of the year.  Burney went the distance, allowing two runs on seven hits with three strikeouts. Arseneau took the loss after giving up three runs on three hits in 3.2 innings of work.

Both teams will play Saturday as Salem State ends their regular season on the road in a doubleheader against Fitchburg State beginning at 12:00 PM. Framingham State will play at Bridgewater State in a doubleheader starting at 1:00 PM.
