U-MASS Dartmourth 2 Salem State 1 (OT) – Local Players Contribute

SALEM. – Desarai Melendez (Brockton, Mass.) scored seven minutes into overtime to lift the UMass Dartmouth Corsairs to a 2-1, come-from-behind-victory over the Salem State Vikings at Alumni Field on Saturday afternoon. UMass Dartmouth picks up their first Little East win (1-2) and improve to 2-3 on the season while Salem State slips to 1-5 and 0-3 in conference.

Melendez fired in a shot from five yards out to beat keeper Gabriella Cerro (Beverly, Mass.) with the game-winner.

UMass Dartmouth controlled possession for much of the first half, outshooting Salem State 8-0 while taking seven corners to just one for the Vikings. Despite the advantage, the teams headed into halftime tied 0-0.

Salem State’s Courtney Kilgore (Wakefield, Mass.) broke the ice in the 37th minute off a feed from Alyssa Drouin (Methuen, Mass.). The Corsairs, who held a 26-2 advantage in shots, found themselves trailing with just over 10 minutes left until a corner attempt set up Delaney Burns (Wayne, N.J.) by Erin Kish (Littleton, Mass.) for the equalizer.

Allison Burke (Franklin, Mass.) made just a save to pick up the win while Cerro, who played well in the loss, stopped 15 shots on net.

UMass Dartmouth finished with a 15-2 edge in corners.
