WESTFIELD, MASS — Marcus Zelzer (Green Bay, Wis.) of Salem State men’s ice hockey has been named the Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference Male Scholar-Athlete of the Year honoree which is voted on by the eight athletic directors from around the conference during the Annual Meeting in May.
Receiving the MASCAC Male Scholar-Athlete of the Year honor caps off an excellent career on and off the ice for the recent grad from Green Bay, Wisconsin. Unfortunately, his senior season was cut short due to injury, but he had already accumulated many accolades prior to this year.
During the 2015-16 season, Zelzer was named the MASCAC Men’s Ice Hockey Player of the Year, named to the CCM DII-DIII Men’s Hockey All-American Team, had the nation’s longest winning streak at 17 games to finish 18-2 and tied for second most wins in DIII during the season.
He also finished the 2016 regular season first in the MASCAC in both goals against average (1.76) and save percentage (.932); four shutouts. He was a finalist for the 2016 Sid Watson Award, which is presented annually to the nation’s best NCAA Division III Men’s Ice Hockey player and the Joe Concannon Award, which recognizes New England’s best American-born hockey player in Divisions II and III.
Off the ice, Zelzer graduated earlier this month with his bachelor’s degree in criminal justice and a 3.91 GPA. He is a member of the National Collegiate Athlete Honor Society Chi Alpha Sigma and has been named to the Salem State Dean’s list and MASCAC All-Academic three times. Earlier this month, he received the Salem State John D. Galaris Scholar-Athlete Award.
Throughout his collegiate career at Salem State, Zelzer has been involved with the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee, Team Impact and Special Olympics. Off campus, he volunteered with the Salem Halloween parade and community involvement walks. He was an intern with the Brown County Courthouse in 2016 and more recently, he was an intern with a Criminal Defense Attorney in Boston.
The MASCAC Scholar-Athlete of the Year has been awarded annually since 1980 to a student-athlete who has excelled in both the classroom and field of play while maintaining at least a 3.20 cumulative grade point average through their last year of athletic eligibility.
