Salem State Men’s Ice Hockey Opens With 3-2 Win Over Babson, Three Fall Teams Gear-up For Post Season Play

FALMOUTH, Mass.—Salem State University scored a pair of goals just 32 seconds apart early in the third period on its way to defeating Babson College, 3-2, in non-conference men’s ice hockey action on Saturday at the Falmouth Ice Arena.

Senior Charlie Ackerman (Bradenton, Fla.) finished with a goal and an assist, while junior Tommy Munichiello (Weymouth, Mass.) scored once for the Beavers. Seniors Ryan Gouveia (Dartmouth, Mass.) and Joe DePietto (Westbury, Mass.) both chipped in with an assist, and junior goaltender Matt Pompa (Palm City, Fla.) recorded 16 saves in the loss.

Senior Michael Casale (Stoney Creek, Ontario), classmate Derek Makimaa (Swartz Creek, Mich.) and junior Parker Wood (Rochester Hills, Mich.) all scored for the Vikings, who got 49 saves from senior netminder Jason Pucciarelli (Newmarket, Onatario_

The Green and White outshot Salem State 21-9 in the opening period, but fell behind 1-0 on Casale’s goal at the 17:02 mark. The Beavers responded less than two minutes later though, as Ackerman ripped a shot from the point past Pucciarelli for a power play goal with 1:06 to go in the stanza.

The three best scoring chances of the second period all came in the final 90 seconds of the frame. Wood (Rochester Hills, Mich.) and Babson senior Rob Devaney (Reading, Mass.) missed high and wide, respectively, before Pompa denied Makimaa’s blast from the right circle with 3.6 seconds to go to keep the game deadlocked.

Salem State went in front for good with the teams playing 4-on-4 early in the third period. Wood stuffed home a centering feed from sophomore Parker Stevens (St. Louis, Mo.) just 1:14 into the frame, and Makimaa striped a Beavers’ defenseman at the blue line and buried the breakaway chance to make it 3-1 just 32 seconds later.

The Green and White pulled Pompa for good with 2:14 left and cut its deficit to one when Munichiello tipped home Ackerman’s shot from the point with 29 seconds remaining. Pucciarelli made a blocker save on Gouveia in the waning seconds to help close out the win.

The Beavers, who finished 1-for-6 on the power play, outshot the Vikings 51-19 on the afternoon.

Babson (0-1_ returns to action on Friday when it visits Castleton at 7 p.m., while Salem State (1-0) travels to Westfield State on Thursday at 7:35 p.m.


Post season play for other SSU Teams

SALEM — Three Salem State teams will gear up for MASCAC Tournament action this week. The women’s soccer team will host MCLA in a MASCAC quarterfinal match on Halloween at Alumni Field. Game time is set for 1:00 PM. Salem State earned the #4 seed after going 4-3 in conference and 9-7-1 overall. They will face #5 seed MCLA, which finished the regular season 3-12 and 2-5 in conference.

The men’s soccer team, which earned the top seed for the first time since 2012, will host either #4 seed Framingham State or #5 seed Bridgewater State on Friday, November 3rd at Alumni Field. Salem State went unbeaten in conference at 7-0 and finished the regular season 11-5. Game time is set for 7:00 PM. If the Vikings advance to the championship, the game will be at Alumni Field on Sunday, November 5th at 1:00 PM.

The women’s volleyball team garnered the #6 seed and will travel to #3 Westfield State for a quarterfinal round game on Wednesday, November 1st at 7:00 PM. The Vikings went 11-15 and 3-4 in the MASCAC while the Owls went 12-15 and 5-2 in conference.


Volleyball Tri-Meet

SALEM, MASS. –  Salem State hosted Bridgewater State and Brandeis in a tri-meet on Saturday afternoon at Twohig Gymnasium. If the final
regular season matches of the year, the Bears defeated the Vikings by scores of 25-23, 27-29, 25-23 and 25-10 in a Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference (MASCAC) match in the opener. Brandeis recorded two wins on the day, 25-11, 25-16 and 25-19 over the Bears and defeated Salem State in three closely played sets, 25-23, 26-24 and 25-22. Brandeis goes to 15-11 on the season while Bridgewater State is now 7-21 and 3-4 in the MASCAC. The Vikings stand at 11-15 and 3-4 in the MASCAC.

Salem State honored three members of their senior class before the match. Olivia Swiatek(Rockland, Mass.), captain Emily Russo (Newport, R.I.) and Hannah Mullarkey (Salem, Mass.) all competed for the Vikings for four years.

Bridgewater State 3 Salem State 1

Bridgewater State raced out to an 8-3 lead in set one behind two kills each from Alexis Duarte (Fairhaven, Mass.) and Kayla Baril (Seekonk, Mass.).  Salem State was able to tie the match after back-to-back attacking errors by the Bears and pulled ahead before Bridgewater State opened a 17-14 lead. The Vikings temporarily took the lead, 21-19 on a kill by Samantha Chaisson(Duxbury, Mass.), but Bridgewater State took advantage of multiple Salem State errors in the stretch to pull out a 25-23 win. Three kills by Jasmine Severino (Lawrence, Mass.) helped Salem State build a 9-3 lead in set two. However, the Bears rallied to tie the score at 10-all behind back-to-back errors and went ahead on a kill by Elizabeth Roberts (Swansea, Mass.). The teams traded points with neither team gaining more than a two-point advantage until a kill by Maddi O’Connor(Hamilton, Mass.) put the Vikings up 22-19. Following a Bears’ spurt and trailing 25-24, Salem State regrouped and pulled out a 29-27 win as successive errors by Bridgewater State closed the set. The Vikings once again raced out to an 8-3 lead behind two kills from Emily Russo (Newport, R.I.) in set three.  Again Bridgewater State came back, and a 7-4 run gave the Bears a 17-14 advantage as Baril recorded her 10th kill of the match. The Bears then pulled away and cemented a 25-33 victory with a kill by Roberts.  Set four saw the Bears jump out in front 11-4 with two kills each by Roberts and Gibbons. Two kills by Sydney Rice Medway, Mass.) helped push the lead to 14-4. With a 20-7 advantage, Bridgewater State closed the set on an 11-6 surge as two kills each by Baril and Gibbons gave the Bears a 25-10 win.

Baril had 13 kills and 18 digs while Gibbons and Roberts had nine each for the Bears. Elexi Miskiv (Centerville, Mass.) had a match-high 34 digs. Salem State’s Morgan Adams (Scotia, N.Y) recorded 12 kills and Mackenzie Salls (Turner Falls, Mass.) 31 assists. Olivia Swiatek (Rockland, Mass.) earned 15 digs.

Brandeis 3 Bridgewater State 0

Brandies cruised to a three game sweep of the Bears in their first match of the day. The Judges built a 14-5 lead in first set following a kill by Kristen Frauens (Webster, N.Y.). Three straight service aces by Marlee Nork (Chicago III.) helped Brandeis extend their margin to 18-6. Leading 23-11, Shea Decker–Jacoby (Los Angeles, Calif.) recorded back to back kills to give the Judges a 25-11 win. Poor hitting by Bridgewater State and three kills by Emma Bartlett (Duxbury, Mass.) helped Brandeis to an 11-2 early advantage in set two. The Bears managed to pull ahead following six straight errors by Brandeis, but behind the strong play of Belle Scott (Portland, Ore.) – three kills, the Judges regained control to pull ahead 15-12 before cruising to a 25-16 win. Bridgewater State led 8-3 in set three before Brandeis pulled even at 10-all following an attacking error. Three attack errors helped the Bears build a 14-11 lead, but two kills by Clare Meyers (Richfield, Wisc.) and one by Decker-Jacoby put the Judges on top 17-16 during a 6-2 run. The Judges gained breathing room with a 23-18 lead behind back-to-back kills from Zara Platt (Fountain Valley, Calif.) and finished off the set on a service ace by Megan Osorio Moran (Hollywood, Fla.), as the Judges won 25-19.

Bartlett finished with 11 kills for the Judges while Leah Pealrman (El Paso, Texas) had 15 assists and Yvette Cho (San Diego, Calif.) 10 digs. Alyssa Kelly (Mansfield, Mass.) had seven assists for the Bears and Abigail Gardner (Holden, Mass.) contributed 10 digs.

Brandeis 3 Salem State 0

A tightly contested first set was played between the Judges and Vikings. A kill by Decker-Jacoby put Brandeis up 9-7. Salem State responded with an 11-1 run as multiple errors gave the Vikings an 18-10 lead. However, four straight kills by Meyers pulled the Judges to within 19-16. With the game tied 20-all, Brandeis closed the set with a 5-2 run as Decker-Jacoby finished the set with a kill. The Judges hit .333 with 14 kills on 30 total attempts to edge the Vikings 26-24 in set two.  A kill and ace by Decker-Jacoby gave Brandeis an 11-6 advantage, but Salem State stayed in the match and battled back from a 21-17 deficit as kills by Morgan Adams (Scotia, N.Y.) and O’Connor and two aces by Samantha Chaisson (Duxbury, Mass.) gave Salem State a 22-21 lead. However, once again Decker-Jacoby and Meyers recorded kills to propel the Judges to a 26-24 victory. The third set once again was well contested by Salem State, which led 12-11 after a kill by Emily Russo(Newport, R.I.). The Judges took advantage of poor play by the Vikings to build a 19-16 lead. Back-to-back kills by Severino brought Salem State to within 21-20, but kills by Meyers and Marissa Bogart (Blaine, Minn.) and two errors by the Vikings gave the Judges a 25-22 win.

Decker-Jacoby had 16 kills for Brandeis while Nork had 25 assists and Grace Krumpack (Cincinnati, Ohio) 20 digs. Severino topped Salem State with seven kills while Chaisson had four aces. Adams contributed with 14 assists and Mullarkey 15 digs.
