Salem State Baseball Falls to Suffolk University – SSU Softball Wins Two – Noted Performances by Local Athletes

BASEBALL

SALEM  –  Suffolk University earned a 7-5 come-from-behind victory over Salem State at the Central Campus Baseball Field on Wednesday afternoon. The Rams scored four runs in the top of the ninth to improve to 5-6 on the season. The Vikings slide to 8-6. 
 
Salem State scored three runs in the bottom of the first as Dan Connors (Danvers, Mass.) opened the scoring with an RBI double.  Joe Kasper (Lynn, Mass.) and Teghan Malionek (Salem, Mass.) followed with RBI singles for a 3-0 lead. 
 
Starter Joshua Bell (Uxbridge, Mass.) allowed three straight walks to load the bases in the second, before Kevin Belskie (Norristown, Pa.) drew the fourth base on balls to put Suffolk on the scoreboard. JP Reiling (Nahant, Mass.) came in from the bullpen, but the fifth consecutive walk made it a one-run game. Kevin Higgins (North Attleboro, Mass.) grounded into a run scoring double play, to tie the ball game at 3-all.
  
Reiling pitched 5.1 innings and allowed just one hit with four walks as the game remained tied until the sixth. Malionek reached on a fielder’s choice and Colton Fontaine (Newburyport, Mass.) followed with a double to put runners on second and third. A passed ball moved the runners up a base and Alex Toomey (Beverly, Mass.) blasted a triple for a 5-3 Vikings’ lead.
 
Tim Woods (Wilmington, Mass.) entered in the top of the ninth after Richie Sharp (Townsend, Mass.) pitched 1.2 innings of scoreless relief. After a strikeout, Woods allowed a single and a walk that brought in Andrew McLaughlin (Peabody, Mass.). Kevin Higgins (North Attleboro, Mass. ) greeted McLaughlin with an RBI double and Brady Chant (Warwick, R.I.) belted a two-run triple as Suffolk went ahead 6-5. Sean Cameron (Milfrod, Conn.) added another run as the Rams exited the inning with a 7-5 lead.
 
Starter Ryan Pordes (Hawthorne, Calif.) went 7.0 innings on the hill for the Rams allowing five runs on 10 hits and one walk. Salem State’s Bell walked five of the seven batters faced in 1.0 innings of work before retiring to the dugout. The right-handed rookie gave up three earned runs all in the second inning. Chuck Gibson (Malden, Mass.) pitched two innings of-not-hit relief to earn the win for Suffolk. 


SOFTBALL

SALEM – Salem State took two from Plymouth State on Wednesday afternoon at Alumni Field. Meghan Black (Winchendon, Mass.) pitched a complete game to lead the Vikings to a 4-2 victory in game one. In game two, IIeish Burney (Bristol, Conn.) scattered four hits as Salem State won 5-1 to improve to 10-4 on the year. The Panthers slide to 8-10.

Black went the distance to earn her sixth win of the season, allowing two runs (one earned) on eight hits with a strikeout. Plymouth State jumped on top in the first on an RBI groundout by Abrie Davis (Amherst, N.H.). The Vikings tied the game in the bottom of the inning on a run scoring groundout by Bobbie Dee Regan (Lynn, Mass.). Salem State plated single runs in the second and third innings before Rachel Morrissey (Salem, N.H) pulled the Panthers to within a run with a run scoring double. Gabryanna Cardenas (Oxford, Mass.) provided an insurance run in the sixth with a sacrifice fly as Black shutdown Plymouth State in the seventh despite giving up a leadoff single.  

Caitlyn Miller (Lee, N.H.) took the loss for Plymouth State going 5.1 innings and allowing four runs (three earned) on six hits with four strikeouts.            

In game two, Jen Crovo (Melrose, Mass.) led off the bottom of the first with a home run as Salem State scored three runs in the first inning to cruise to 5-1 victory. The Vikings added two more runs on a Chloe Manousos (Lowell, Mass.) double and later increased their lead with an RBI single by Manousos in the third inning.  
Meanwhile, Burney shutdown the Panthers’ offense as she held a shutout until the fifth inning before giving up an unearned run. Burney finished the day with a complete game effort, allowing just an unearned run on four hits with three strikeouts and a walk.
Starter Allison Moylan (Methuen, Mass.) took the loss as she gave up five runs (two earned) on eight hits. Kayla Mathieu (Fairfax, Vt.) pitched 3.2 innings of scoreless relief for Plymouth State, giving up just a hit while recording a pair of strikeouts with two walks.
