SECOND UPDATE–MSP Investigating Double-Fatal Crash on Route 1A in East Boston

SECOND UPDATE

Preliminary investigation into this morning’s double-fatal crash on Route 1A indicates that the Subaru Legacy had exited the Ted Williams Tunnel and was traveling northbound on 1A when it impacted the rear of the shuttle bus owned by the Hampton Inn, which had just entered 1A north from the airport.

The impact caused the bus to veer to its left, striking the jersey barrier, and then back to its right, hitting the right side barrier. Two occupants of the bus were ejected and were determined to be deceased at the scene, a 59-year-old man and a 47-year-old woman, both from El Paso, Texas. Their names are not being released at this time.

Three occupants of the bus — the driver and two other passengers — were not ejected but suffered injuries and remain at Massachusetts General Hospital. Their injuries are not life-threatening.

The shuttle is equipped with seatbelts. Seatbelt use by victims will be determined by the ongoing investigation.

The driver and sole occupant of the Subaru, an adult male from Swampscott, was also transported to MGH with non-life threatening injuries.

MSP does not release names of surviving victims of crashes unless they are criminally charged.

The investigation into the crash is ongoing to determine whether criminal charges will be sought. That investigation is being conducted by Troop E of the Massachusetts State Police along with the State Police Collision Analysis and Reconstruction Section, the State Police Crime Scene Services Section, and the State Police Detective Unit for Suffolk County.

State Police have the vehicles involved and will process them as part of the investigation. We will not be giving media access to the vehicles for photographs. Also, cognizant that media often ask the DOT for video footage of state highway incidents, we have asked DOT to not release any related video footage if any exists.

FIRST UPDATE

We continue to process evidence at the Route 1A crash scene as part of the investigation and crash reconstruction.

Preliminary investigation indicates that the crash involved a Subaru Legacy operated by a Swampscott man and a Ford shuttle van carrying passengers to and from the airport and one of the local hotels.

Two passengers from the shuttle van, a man and a woman, both from out-of-state, were determined to be deceased at the scene. Their names are not being released at this time.

Four other occupants from both vehicles were transported to Massachusetts General Hospital with injuries that are not believed to be life-threatening.

The exact sequence of events and any contributing factors that led to the crash remain subjects of the ongoing investigation. The investigation, including witness accounts, physical evidence, and the crash reconstruction will determine whether any criminal charges are sought.

The road closures as preciously released remain in place at this time to accommodate the investigation. We hope to have the closed roads reopened at some point during the morning commute.

No further information is being released at this time.

Groveland Police Charge Juvenile 17, in Connection with Threatening Social Media Post

GROVELAND — Police Chief Robert J. Kirmelewicz reports that the Groveland Police Department this evening arrested a Pentucket Regional High School student and charged him in connection with a post he made on social media, involving a gun, making a threat against the high school.

A JUVENILE MALE, AGE 17, OF GROVELAND was arrested without incident at his home shortly before 9 p.m. He was charged with Communicating a Threat to a Public School.

Shortly after 7 p.m. Tuesday, another juvenile entered the West Newbury Police Department and reported that they observed a posting on the social network Instagram allegedly depicting the suspect with referencing the first day of school and showing what appeared to be a firearm tucked into his waistband.

West Newbury Police contacted Groveland Police and the suspect was taken into custody within an hour and a half of the initial report.

The firearm in question was determined to be an Airsoft pistol, which is considered a firearm for the purposes of school building threats. Groveland Police, however, do not believe there was ever any danger to the school community. Schools will open on schedule tomorrow.

“Regardless of the intent or lack thereof behind these kinds of social media postings, municipal police departments take any form of threat against a school very seriously,” Chief Kirmelewicz said. “I am very pleased with the level of teamwork that exists among the three police departments in Pentucket region. We were able to locate and apprehend this individual within 90 minutes of the initial report.”

On the first day of school annually, the three police departments that encompass the Pentucket Regional School District — Groveland, West Newbury, and Merrimac — have an increased presence at all four elementary schools as well as the Middle School and High School complex. That will continue tomorrow, but officials stress that the schools are safe.

“I appreciate and value the good work of our police departments. They continually provide our communities with peace of mind and an extremely high level of public safety and security,” said Jeffrey Mulqueen, Superintendent of Schools for the Pentucket Regional School District. “I am confident that the start of the new school year will be a positive one for our students, faculty, staff, and families.”

The suspect is being held without bail and will be arraigned Wednesday in Lawrence Juvenile Court
