By Gabbi Riggi

The North Shore Navigators dropped a doubleheader to the Seacoast Mavericks Thursday, 8-3 and 2-1 respectively, falling to 16-22 on the season.

The first game, an abbreviated four inning set to complete a rain shortened game from June 27. Seacoast returned to the field holding a 3-0 lead in the top of the fifth. Austin Masel (Holy Cross) came in as the North Shore’s first run, brought in on a double that split the outfield by Alec Cargin (Wofford).

Chris Cabrera (Barry) squeaked a single through center to score Cargin from second. Brad Douglas (Rhode Island College) struck a single through the left side to tie the game at three. A double play ended the inning and the North Shore scoring for the first game of the night.

AJ DiFillipo cracked a two run home run to deep right to boost the Mavericks lead to 5-3. Sean Sullivan followed suit, sailing a triple into the right field corner into the Maverick bullpen. A sacrifice fly by Ben Irvine would bring Sullivan home to add another tally.

The top of the ninth would score two runs on four hits for Seacoast, but the North Shore wasn’t done yet. Nick Falkson (Tufts) walked with the bases loaded to bring in a run, and Nick Fuhrmannâ’s (Frostburg) chopper up the middle would be enough to score Joey Pena (St. Thomas Aquinas) to make it 8-5.

The second game of the evening, a seven inning game, brought a pitching duel to the Fraser Field mound.

The Mavericks garnered a single hit against all-star starter Henry Funaro (UMass Lowell). The only earned run on the night came as Jose Negron scored with a bases loaded wild pitch which was followed in the next at bat. Beau Arsenault came across as a ball up the middle was bobbled by the second baseman for one out, allowing the run to score.

Winning Seacoast pitcher Wesley Tobin had a no-hitter through five innings. The first hit off the game came off the bat of Cargin as he singled to left and was able to advance on a wild pitch. Douglas mirrored the dunk into left, bringing Cargin sliding in for the team’s only run of the night.

The Navigators return to action on Friday to host the Martha’s Vineyard Sharks.
