Salem State Women’s Basketball WIns

SALEM –  Kia Fernandes (Wareham, Mass.) had a double-double of 22 points and 15 rebounds and head coach Al Berger notched his first collegiate head coaching win as Salem State knocked off previously unbeaten Mount Ida 72-60 on Thursday evening at Twohig Gymnasium. Fernandes went 10-13 from the field and also added five blocks in 34 minutes of action, helping the Vikings improve to 1-5 on the season. The Mustangs now stand at 1-4.

Salem State jumped out to a 14-8 lead, limiting Mount Ida to just 15.8% (3-19) shooting in the first quarter. Behind the strong play of Fernandes, who had 11 points, seven rebounds and three blocks in the first half, the Vikings built a 16-point advantage in the second quarter as the Mustangs continued to struggle from the field, following up a dismal first quarter, with a 1-9 (11.1%) effort in the second. Free throws by Imani Bumbus (Dedham, Mass.) and Caty Oliver (Oviedo, Fla.) cut the deficit to 33-20 right before the half as Bumpus, who had only four points, led Mount Ida with seven first half rebounds. Turnovers plagued both teams as the two combined for 26 in the first half.

The Mustangs found their stroke in the second half and quickly cut into the 13-point deficit. A 10-0 run highlighted by eight points from Breanna Muir (Wareham, Mass.), who made back-to-back three-pointers, and two free throws by Valerie Martin (Derry, N.H) made the score 35-32 with 6:18 remaining. A Jamie Moscato (Taunton, Mass.) three-pointer tied the game at 43-43, but Norma Waggett (Saugus, Mass.) answered with her own three-ball to give Salem State a three-point advantage. However, four straight points by Mount Ida gave the Mustangs their first lead, 47-46 since early in the first quarter at the 1:37 mark.

Six consecutive points by Fernandes to start the fourth gave Salem State a seven-point cushion, 55-48 with 5:47 remaining as once again Mount Ida went cold from the field, scoring just one basket, a three-pointer by Patricia Liotta (Hampton, Bays, N.Y.) over an eight-minute span. Leading  62-54, the Vikings kept the margin close to 10-points before settling for a 72-60 victory.

Waggett finished with 23 points on 7-17 shooting, including 8-9 from the line and four blocks. Brianna Rodriguez (Salem, Mass.) contributed seven points, seven rebounds, and six steals. Tyra Scott (Methuen, Mass.) – 12 rebounds and Saran Kaba (Dorchester, Mass.) – 10 boards and six assists helped the Vikings to a 24-3 advantage in second chance points as Salem State grabbed 56 rebounds while shooting 38.6% (27-70) from the field for the game, but just 2-22 (9.1%) from three-point range. The Vikings bench outscored Mount Ida 27-6.

Liotta paced the Mustangs with 18 points, including a perfect 4-for-4 beyond the arc. Moscato ended with 12 points and six rebounds while Bumpus had nine points and eight rebounds for Mount Ida, which shot 16-59 (27.1%) for the game
