Beverly Opens MIAA Division 2 Playoffs With 35-10 Over Somerville – Post Game Interviews – Game Broadcast

BEVERLY – (Radio & Photos) The Beverly Panthers (6-2) defeated the Somerville Highlanders (4-4) 35 to 10 this afternoon at a wet Hurd Stadium.  The Panthers scored just 1:36 into the game following a Somerville fumble on its first play of the game from scrimmage.  Beverly needed just two plays before Kyle Chouinard ran it in from 12 yards out.

Sam Abate made it 13-0 Panthers with 4:41 left to go in the first quarter to complete a 68 yard TD drive that took only 3 plays.  Luke Samperi added both PATs in the quarter.

Somerville QB Elijah Jeffreys connected with receiver Shaq Joseph on a pass-catch-run play that covered 82 yards for a td with 10:41 left in the half to cut the score to 14-7.

Somerville placekicker Emerson Klemz added a 30 yard field goal with 5:05 left in the third quarter, before the Panthers scored 21 unanswered points:  Chounaird an 87-yard kick off return for a touchdown; Kevin Flaherty, a 13 yard run off tackle for a td to finish off a 5 play, 54 yard drive; and lineman Nick Shairs, filling in at fullback, a 1 yard plunge completing an 11 play, 65 yard scoring drive.

Johhny Jones grabbed two interceptions and was a standout on defense for the Panthers.

Somerville outgained Beverly, 305 to 289 from scrimmage.

Beverly will play at Tewksbury next Saturday afternoon.
