Gloucester Police are Investigating a Suspicious Device Found This Morning on Farrington Avenue

GLOUCESTER — Assistant Chief John McCarthy reports that the Gloucester Police Department is investigating a suspicious device found in the field on Farrington Avenue this morning.

At 10:55 a.m., the Massachusetts Environmental Police, who were on the field completing work, came across what appeared to be an explosive device made from PVC piping, and immediately contacted Gloucester Police.

Officers arrived on scene to find a device, which was 1 inch in diameter and approximately 6 inches long, with a burn mark down one side consistent with a fuse/wick burn. The pipe appeared to be filled with a cement-like substance on one side, while the other side was hollow.

The Massachusetts State Police Bomb Squad arrived on scene and determined the device had already been detonated and there was no danger to the public.

The incident remains under investigation by the Gloucester Police Department.
