Men’s Ice Hockey Wins Playoff Opener 

BEVERLY – The No. 11/11 nationally ranked Endicott men’s ice hockey team scored seven goals in the first period en route to an eventual 10-2 victory over Suffolk University in the Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) quarterfinals on Saturday evening at Raymond J. Bourque Arena.

Endicott (18-5-3), the No. 2 seed in the tournament, will find out its semifinal round opponent later tonight at the conclusion of the three other games being played in the bracket. Meanwhile, Suffolk sees its 2017-18 season come to a close at 9-13-3.

Anthony Petrella (Hilton, N.Y.), Joseph Slovak (South Yarmouth, Mass.), Jason Kalinowski (Stamford, Conn.), Tommy Besinger (Milton, Mass.), Josh Bowes (Edmonton, Alberta), Connor Costello (Nottingham, N.H.), and Jack Musil (Hull, England) all scored in the Gulls’ seven-goal first period and the game was pretty much over from there. Petrella started the offensive outburst at the 2:07 mark of the period by punching home a rebound near the left post and the rest of his teammates followed with tallies at 5:49, 7:31, 12:44, 13:14, 16:01, and 16:10, respectively.

Endicott also added one goal in the second – also scored by Petrella – and two more in the third (Slovak, Bowes) to run away with the victory.

Mark Specia (Ringwood, N.J.) made 12 saves in two periods (39:53) to improve to 11-2-1, while Justin Ketola (Esko, Minn.) stopped 10 shots in the third.

BEYOND THE BOX SCORE
Endicott is 5-1-0 at home in the playoffs.
The Gulls are 6-0-1 against Suffolk in the all-time series.
Slovak finished with a career-high and program-record-tying five points (2g, 3a) tonight.
Petrella (2g, 2a) and Bowes’ (2g, 2a) four-point nights rank tied for sixth all-time in a single-game, respectively.

FOR THE FOES
Brian Brooks (Canton, Mass.) broke up the shutout bid at 15:24 of the second. Jack Kelly (Arlington, Mass.) and Nick Abbene (Merrick, N.Y.) were credited with assists on the goal.
Jack Jenkins (Billerica, Mass.) notched his third goal of the season at 19:15 of the third off feeds from Matt Bucher (Cromwell, Conn.) and Mikhail Bryan (Dayton, Ohio).
Michael Levine (Clarendon Hill, Ill.) had 13 saves in the first period, while Will Ribas (Westwood, Mass.) compiled 30 saves over the final 46:46 of action off the bench.

No. 11/11 Endicott (18-5-3), who is also positioned as the No. 2 seed in the CCC tournament, will find out its semifinal round opponent later tonight at the conclusion of the three other games being played in the bracket. Meanwhile, Suffolk sees its 2017-18 season come to a close at 9-13-3.


Endicott Women’s Hockey Loses in Overtime 

WATERVILLE, Maine – The Endicott women’s ice hockey team traveled to Colby College for their last regular season contest and were handed a 2-1 overtime loss.

Colby got on the board first at the 12:40 mark of the second period with a goal from Natalie Maus (Evergreen, Colo.).

The Gulls responded with a tally of their own just under three minutes later when Maggie Layo (Sandwich, Mass.) found the back of the net.

Neither team was able to score the game-winner throughout the rest of regulation so the contest headed into overtime. Both goalies made several key stops in the opening minutes of the extra frame, but Carly Thomas (Lincolnshire, Ill.) scored the golden goal at the 3:48 mark to give the Mules the win.

Vendela Jonsson (Linkoping, Sweden) made 41 saves during the loss and shifted to 12-4-1 on the season.

Caroline Hughes (Andover, Mass.) and Lexi Klein (Shoreview, Minn.) assisted on Layo’s goal.
Jade Meier (Fairbanks, Alaska) led the team with six shots.

Men’s Basketball Wins League Game on the Road

BRISTOL, R.I. – The Endicott men’s basketball team secured a 72-70 conference victory against Roger Williams on Saturday evening at the Recreation Center Gymnasium.

Tied 70-70 with three seconds to play in the game, the Hawks fouled Endicott sophomore guard Keith Brown (Pelham, N.H.) which gave the Gulls a chance to clinch the win at the free throw line. The No. 11 leading scorer in all of NCAA Division III didn’t disappoint as Brown buried both of his attempts from the charity stripe to grab a late 72-70 advantage.

Moments later, Brown also came up huge on the defensive when he blocked a game-winning three-point field goal attempt as time expired to ensure the victory.

Brown finished the game with 13 points, 11 rebounds, six assists, two blocks and one steal. It marks his first double-double of the season. Meanwhile, Matt McDevitt (Cumberland, Maine) added a team-high 18 points and Nick Thibeault (Gorham, Maine) had eight points, eight rebounds, one assist and a block.

Fellow starters Joel Villa (Bronx, N.Y.) and Joe Shehadi (Dorset, Vt.) contributed 10 points and eight points, respectively.

BEYOND THE BOX SCORE
Endicott led by seven points (70-63) with 2:26 remaining in the contest after a made three-pointer from Brown, but Roger Williams put together a 7-0 run down the stretch to even the score at 70-70 before Brown’s free throws and block to seal it.
The Gulls are 29-8 against Roger Williams in the all-time series.
Endicott improved to 9-3 on the road this season with today’s victory.
The Gulls led for 33:21 in the matchup and only trailed by no more than two points the entire game (10-8, 14:12 1st half | 14-12, 8:20 1st half).

No. 3 seed Endicott (17-8, 12-6 CCC) will host No. 6 seed Wentworth on Tuesday, February 20 in the Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) Tournament quarterfinals at 5:30 PM. No. 4 Roger Williams (17-8, 11-7 CCC) welcomes No. 5 University of New England to its campus next Tuesday at 7:30 PM.


Endicott Women’s Basketball Takes Down #1 Roger Williams 

BEVERLY – The Endicott women’s basketball team defeated top-ranked Roger Williams University, 62-60, during its last regular season Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) matchup.

The Gulls jumped out to an early lead, ending the first quarter up 24-13. They went on to extend that lead to 40-28 heading into halftime.

Roger Williams came out in the third quarter looking to rally and closed the gap to 53-43 with one quarter remaining in regulation.

The Hawks continued to battle, coming within one point with just under three minutes left to play. The Gulls stood strong though and ultimately secured the 62-60 victory.

Gabriella Coppola (Watertown, Mass.) and Hannah Kiernan (Wenham, Mass.) led the team with 19 points each.

BEYOND THE BOX SCORE
Mikaela Rogers (Haverhill, Mass.) pulled down a team-high four rebounds.
Coppola also led the team in steals (4) and assists (5).
Kiernan recorded one block during the contest.
The Gulls have now tied the most conference victories in a season during the Brittany Hutchinson era (14-4 in 2013-14 | ECAC Champions | Hutchinson currently in her seventh season).
FOR THE FOES
Tegan Dunn (Burlington, Conn.) led the team with 18 points, while Gabby Jerahian (Quincy, Mass.) had 16 and Anna Walther (Northampton, Mass.) had 15.
Dunn also had a team-high 17 rebounds and five blocks.
Walther dished out five assists throughout the game.
The Hawks held a 46-23 rebound advantage.

Endicott (16-9, 14-4 CCC) and Roger Williams (21-4, 15-4 CCC) now await the announcement of the first round pairings for the CCC Tournament.
