Endicott College Saturday Sports Update: Women’s Hockey and Basketball Win – Five Game Summaries

Men’s Ice Hockey Loses 4-0

BEVERLY – The Endicott men’s ice hockey team fell to Salve Regina, 4-0, in an Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) Northeast matchup on Saturday evening at Raymond J. Bourque Arena.

Seahawks junior goaltender Alexander Devine (Hampton, N.H.) stopped 21 shots to record his first win and shutout of the 2015-16 campaign, while Eric Schultz (Durham, N.H.), Evan Schmidbauer (San Diego, Calif.), and Marc Biggs (Plano, Texas) all registered one goal and an assist in the road victory.

Schultz opened the scoring at the 4:09 mark of the first period, before Nicholas Owen (Methuen, Mass.) made it 2-0 at 9:59 with his fifth goal of the season. In the second, Schmidbauer increased the gap to 3-0 at 12:30 and Biggs capped the scoring at the 19:17 mark of the period.

Endicott freshman goaltender Kevin Aldridge (Beverly Hills, Mich.) turned away 40 shots in the loss (11-7-2).

Women’s Ice Hockey Wins Vs. SUNY Canton

CANTON, N.Y. – Freshman forward Caroline Hughes (Andover, Mass.) registered two points and Vendela Jonsson (Linkoping, Sweden) stopped all 34 shots she faced to lead the Endicott women’s ice hockey team to a 3-0 victory over SUNY Canton on Saturday evening at the Roos House.

Behind Jonsson’s strong play in net, Hughes gave the Gulls the only goal they needed in the contest at the 7:56 mark of the first period on feeds from Maggie Layo (Sandwich, Mass.) and Lexi Klein (Shoreview, Minn.).

Endicott went on to receive a second period tally from Samantha Fuller (Moretown, Vt.) at 10:58 and the all-important insurance goal from Danielle Comorre (Tujunga, Calif.) in the third (1:18) to put the clamps on the win.

Jonsson turned away 14 shots in the first, and ten more in the second and third periods, respectively, for her sixth shutout this season. SUNY Canton’s Rebecca Dinardo (Ottawa, Ontario) made 20 saves in the loss (8-5-3).

Men’s Basketball Loses at Salve Regina

NEWPORT, R.I. ­‑ Freshman guard Rob O’Brien (Rindge, N.H.) poured in a career-high 21 points as the Endicott men’s basketball team came up short, 63-62, at Salve Regina University Saturday afternoon on Alumni Day inside the Rodgers Recreation Center.

In a game would feature five ties and four lead changes, the Gulls trailed in the opening stanza until junior guard Max Motroni  (West Warwick, R.I.) drained a three-pointer at the 9:28 mark of the first half to take a 15-14 advantage.

Junior guard Chris Lipscomb (West Springfield, Mass.) followed Motroni’s trey with a layup with 8:27 in the first half for Endicott’s largest lead of the game, up 17-14.

Salve Regina sophomore guard Bryce Boggs (Hyde Park, Mass.) put up a lights out 20-point performance to lead all scorers in the first half as the Seahawks took a 38-33 lead into the locker room, while O’Brien and junior guard Stephen Basden (Lynn, Mass.) tallied eight points apiece in the first half for the Gulls.

The second half saw Salve Regina lead by as much as eight with 18:25 remaining in regulation, as junior forward Connor Costello (Southborough, Mass.) sunk a free throw to extend the lead to 41-33.

Endicott battled back to take a 51-50 edge on Motroni’s layup-and-one with 9:15 to play, but back-and-forth basketball ensued as the teams traded buckets until junior forward Nicholas Bates (Danvers, Mass.) went on a 6-0 run of his own with a pair of layups and a jumper to put the hosts up 61-55 and led the rest of the way.

Motroni attempted a pair of free throws (made one) with 20 seconds remaining to bring the final score to 63-62 in favor of the Seahawks.

BEYOND THE BOX SCORE

  • O’Brien scored a career-high 21 points as he hit a game-high five triples on nine attempts.
  • Motroni joined O’Brien in double-figures with his 19th consecutive game of the season scoring at least 10 points with his 14 point, seven board effort today.

Women’s Basketball Wins at Salve Regina

NEWPORT, R.I.- The Endicott women’s basketball team’s defense shined in a 59-35 road win at Salve Regina University Saturday afternoon on Alumni Day inside the Rodgers Recreation Center.

In a game in which the Gulls never trailed, Endicott opened the contest on a 10-0 run until Salve Regina got on the scoreboard with 3:21 remaining in the first quarter.

With 3:47 left in the first half, freshman guard Kerri Beland (Attleboro, Mass.) got the Seahawks as close as they would get the rest of the game with a layup to cut the deficit to 24-16.

Endicott steadily built a 32-18 edge heading into the halftime break and maintained a double-digit lead the rest of the way.

Sophomore guard Hannah Kiernan (Wenham, Mass.) paced all scorers with a game-high 14 points on 6-of-10 from the floor, and 3-of-5 from the free throw line, along with four rebounds, two assists, a team-leading five steals and one block.

Endicott was able to spread the ball around well as four other Gulls chipped in at least eight points. Junior guard Ilyza Holman (Ashland, Mass.) had nine, while sophomore guard Gabriella Coppola (Watertown, Mass.), senior guard Kelsey Cuddy (Madison, Conn.), sophomore forward Hannah Shaw (Bar Harbor, Maine) all tallied eight points apiece.

  • Sophomore forward Sam Charette (Wenham, Mass.) grabbed a team-leading six rebounds.
  • The Gulls are 7-1 on the road this season and undefeated in conference play.

Men’s Volleyball Defeats Bard

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – The Endicott men’s volleyball team earned victories in both of its matches against Bard College and host MIT on Saturday afternoon at the Rockwell Cage. Endicott defeated Bard, 3-0, by scores of 25-17, 25-14, and 25-22 in their first match of the day, and turned away MIT in a five-set thriller by scores of 25-16, 28-26, 10-25, 26-28, and 16-14 in the nightcap of the twinbill.

MATCH ONE: Endicott 3, Bard 0 (25-17, 25-14, 25-22)

The Gulls limited Bard (0-6) to its second worst hitting percentage this season to bump their record to 2-4 overall on the year.

Sophomore opposite Troy Riorden (Fairport, N.Y.) guided Endicott with a team-high eight kills, four digs, two assists, and one service ace. Ryan Sutherland (Fairport, N.Y.) added six kills (.308 hitting percentage) and four block assists, while Jacob Newman (Chester, N.H.) notched five kills in his first collegiate match to round out the list of highlights for the Blue and Green.

BEYOND THE BOX SCORE

  • Endicott is 3-0 in the all-time series against Bard, which began in 2005.
  • The Gulls have only dropped one set in the three meetings between the two programs.

FOR THE FOES

  • Senior outside hitter Jesse Small (Brookline, Mass.) paced all student-athletes with nine kills. Small also recorded six digs and one service ace in the loss.
  • Small has led the Raptors in kills in the last four matches.
  • Stefan Briggs (San Francisco, Calif.) contributed six kills and one block assist.

MATCH TWO: Endicott 3, No. 13 MIT 2 (25-16, 28-26, 10-25, 26-28, 16-14)

In a match that featured 45 tie scores and 14 lead changes, Endicott came out on top behind several strong performances.

John Osborne (Freehold, N.J.) was instrumental in the win as the senior outside notched a season-high 18 kills to go along with seven digs, four block assists, and one block solo. Riorden nearly produced a double-double with 15 kills (.355 hitting percentage) and eight digs, while Daniel Toth (Glenwood, N.J.) collected 12 kills, four digs, three block assists, and one solo block.

Ryan Sutherland (Fairport, N.Y.) turned in an all-around effort to aid the Gulls in the victory by compiling seven kills (400 hitting percentage), five digs, eight block assists, one block solo, and a service ace. Senior setter Cameron Little (San Diego, Calif.) facilitated the offense with a season-high 49 assists in addition to his nine digs and two block assists.

In the fifth set, Endicott erased an early 5-4 deficit with a 6-2 run that was highlighted by a pair of kills from Riorden and a service ace via freshman Jeremy Doski (Sandy Hook, Conn.). MIT eventually evened the score at 14-14, but Sutherland took over when it counted most using a kill and a service ace to win the match for the Gulls.

BEYOND THE BOX SCORE

  • MIT holds a 17-12 advantage over Endicott in the all-time series, which dates back to 2002.
  • Endicott registered a season-high .684 hitting percentage (min. 15 attempts) in set one (W, 25-16).
  • The Gulls’ 20 kills in set two was also a season-high for a set this year.
  • Chandler Tayek (Rolling Hills Estates, Calif.) had 10 digs in the win for the Gulls, his second double-digit dig effort this season.

  • Yize Dong (Moraga, Calif.) had a game-high 56 assists to along with seven digs, three block assists, and two service aces.
  • Defensively, Brendan Chang (Laytonsville, Md.) and Suyash Fulay (Wexford, Pa.) recorded 17 and 15 digs, respectively.
