Endicott College Baseball Sweeps a Doubleheader – Softball and Men’s Tennis Fall on the Road Today

BRISTOL, R.I. – The Endicott baseball team swept Roger Williams University in a league doubleheader by scores of 5-4 and 6-2 on Saturday afternoon at Paolino Field.

GAME ONE: Endicott 5, Roger Williams 4

Tied 3-3 in the top of the sixth, Endicott pushed across two runs in the frame to come away with the game one victory.

Anthony Serina (Portsmouth, R.I.) broke open the 3-3 tie in the sixth with an RBI single up the middle. Michael Casciano (Somers, Conn.) followed with a sacrifice fly to left field for a two-run cushion on the scoreboard that proved to be critical only a half inning later.

In the bottom of the sixth, Danny Roth (West Hartford, Conn.) cut the Hawks’ deficit in half with a two-out double to left center, but Endicott reliever Nick Quattro (Canton, Conn.) squandered any chance Roger Williams had of tying the game with a groundout to first base for the final out of the inning.

Will Bryant (Cumberland, Maine) made quick work of the Hawks in the seventh with 1-2-3 inning (two fly outs, pop out) for his fifth save of the season.

BEYOND THE BOX SCORE

  • Quattro picked up the win (5-3) on two innings pitched, one run (earned), one walk, and three strikeouts. Quattro is currently second in the conference in wins.
  • Kevin Gould (Rollinsford, N.H.) was dealt the no-decision in today’s contest (4 IP, 4 H, 3 R, 3 ER, 1 BB, 4 K).
  • Corbin Hyde (Lewiston, Maine) went 3-for-4 with two RBI, which both came on his single in the top of the first inning. 

FOR THE FOES

  • Michael Farrell (Bellingham, Mass.) took the loss in relief via five innings pitched, five hits, two runs (both earned), two free passes, and three punchouts. Farrell was forced to spell the Hawks’ starter only six batters into the game.
  • Roth finished game one 2-for-2 at the plate with one run scored and three RBI.

GAME TWO: Endicott 6, Roger Williams 2

Joseph Oriola (Sandwich, Mass.) claimed the victory in relief on 2 1/3 innings pitched, one hit, zero runs, no walks, and a team-high six strikeouts. Bryant also notched his conference-leading sixth save of the season via 1 1/3 innings, one hit, and one strikeout.

Jimmy Hamilton (Schenectady, N.Y.) tossed seven innings in the loss alongside seven hits, six runs (two earned), one free pass, and a game-high eight strikeouts.

Trailing 2-1 in the sixth, Endicott rallied for two runs in the sixth and three more in the seventh to notch the come-from-behind victory.

Casciano and Hyde highlighted the scoring in the sixth with an RBI double and an RBI single, respectively, while Brad Rebello (Bellingham, Mass.) punctuated the Gulls’ eventual win with a two-run single in the seventh after one run had already scored in the frame.

BEYOND THE BOX SCORE

  • With the sweep, Endicott improved to 31-17 in the all-time series against Roger Williams.
  • The Gulls have also won the last four meetings between the programs.
  • Endicott has produced 20 or more wins in nine straight seasons (20-15 in 2017).

FOR THE FOES

  • Sean Gaffney (Simsbury, Conn.) tied up the contest with a run-producing single to center in the second, while Anthony Dominguez (Chester, N.J.) gave the Hawks a 2-1 advantage in the fourth with an RBI double to center.
  • Shane Nowak (Litchfield, N.H.) had the only multi-hit game for either team in game two (2-for-2, one run).

WHAT’S NEXT

Endicott (20-15, 11-5 CCC) will celebrate Senior Day tomorrow at home in a doubleheader against Suffolk University at 12/2:30 PM. Roger Williams (12-27, 5-11 CCC) awaits the announcement of a potential bid into the CCC Tournament field later next week. 


Softball

NEWPORT, R.I. – Amanda Riley’s (Barrington, N.H.) opposite field RBI single in the bottom of the third inning proved to be the difference as first-seeded Salve Regina University topped fourth-seeded Endicott, 1-0, in game five of the Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) Tournament on Saturday afternoon at Toppa Field.

With a runner on third and two outs in the third inning, Riley laced a fastball on the outer half through the left side of the infield to plate Francesca Galeazzi (Lynn, Mass.) for the game’s lone run. 

Kelsey Boarman (North Dighton, Mass.) then worked her way through a pair of jams over the next two frames to give Salve Regina the win. Boarman improved to 15-3 overall on the season with a complete effort that featured five hits, zero runs, one free pass, and a game-high five strikeouts.

Endicott starter Michaela Hamill (Lynn, Mass.) was handed the hard-luck loss on six innings pitched, four hits, one run (earned), one walk, and three punchouts.

BEYOND THE BOX SCORE

  • In the fourth inning, Endicott threatened with runners on second and third base after Olivia Odermatt (Cheshire, Conn.) notched a single through the left side and Jamie Hopgood (Warwick, R.I.) roped a ground-rule double off the the third baseman’s glove, all with two outs. Boarman ended the threat with a groundout to short.
  • In the fifth, Danielle Stratton (Agawam, Mass.) led off the frame with a single and stole second with one out, but Boarman was up to the task once again this time with back-to-back strikeouts (both swinging) to squash Endicott’s rally.
  • Julia McNeill (Smithtown, N.Y.) went 2-for-3 from the two-hole in the lineup to extend her hitting streak to nine straight games. McNeill also has compiled two hits in three straight contests.

FOR THE FOES

  • All four of Salve Regina’s hits came from the top of the order (1-4).
  • Galeazzi, Elizabeth Lombardo (Thomaston, Conn.), Emily Woznick (Sandy Hook, Conn.), and Riley all had singles in that respective order in the lineup.

WHAT’S NEXT

Fourth-seeded Endicott (21-15) will play seventh-seeded Curry in game eight of the CCC Tournament on Friday, May 5 in Newport, Rhode Island at a time to be determined later.

First-seeded Salve Regina (23-11) will host second-seeded Western New England on Friday, May 5 in game nine of the CCC Tournament at a time to be determined later.


Men’s Tennis

BRISTOL, R.I. – Fourth-seeded Roger Williams University (RWU) defeated third-seeded Endicott, 5-3, on Saturday afternoon in the Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) Tournament at the RWU Tennis Courts.

Tied 3-3 in singles action, the Hawks responded behind victories from Nick Spoor (Ballston Spa, N.Y.) and Brendan White (Old Lyme, Conn.) at No. 4 singles (2-6, 6-0, 6-3) and No. 1 singles (1-6, 7-5, 6-2), respectively, to secure the tournament victory.

Sean McAndrews (Vineyard Haven, Mass.) was a double-winner for the Gulls as the senior claimed an 8-5 triumph at No. 2 doubles with Justin Toler (Concord, N.H.) in addition to his No. 6 singles victory (6-2, 6-4). Charles Book (Devon, Pa.) rounded out the list of winners for Endicott with a 6-1, 3-6, 6-4 triumph at No. 2 singles.

BEYOND THE BOX SCORE

  • Book finished his freshman season as the team leader in singles victories (12-5).
  • McAndrews and Toler conclude the year undefeated in doubles (5-0, all at No. 2).

WHAT’S NEXT

Endicott sees its 2016-17 season come to a close at 11-8 overall. Roger Williams (10-7) will travel to first-seeded Eastern Nazarene in the CCC Tournament semifinal round on Wednesday, May 3 at 3 PM.
