Salem State Men’s Basketball Defeats Westfield State 

SALEM – Salem State reached the 100-point plateau for the second time this season as the Vikings dispatched the Westfield State Owls 107-85 in a MASCAC matchup on Saturday afternoon. The Vikings were led by Shaquan Murray (Boston, Mass.) and Sean Bryan (Lowell, Mass.), who had 23 and 22 points respectively to lead five players in double-figures. Bryan also had a game-high 12 rebounds and five assists as Salem State had a season-high 21 assists while shooting 37-66 (56.1%) from the field, including 12-25 (48.0%) from behind the arc. Boxscore

Westfield State was topped by Austin Joseph (Rockland, Mass.), who had 20 points while Peter Mafo (Lynn, Mass.) had 17 points. Moody Bey (Springfield, Mass.), Marcus Collins (Cambridge, Mass.) and Josh Pressley (Springfield, Mass.) all had 10 points apiece for the Owls, which shot 29-65 (44.6%) as a team.

The Owls and Vikings battled evenly over the first 10 minutes after Peter Mafo (Lynn, Mass.) opened the game with a three for Westfield State. A Jacob Lindland (Hamilton, Mass.) trey and put back by Alex Santos (Lawrence, Mass.) gave Salem State a 22-16 lead midway through the first half as the Vikings  went on a 9-0 run to pull ahead 26-16 after a Drew Healy (Lowell, Mass.) layup with 8:32 remaining. Three consecutive baskets by Westfield State drew the Owls to within four, but Healy and Santos sandwiched five points around a layup by Collins that pushed the advantage to seven points, 33-26 with 5:33 left. The Vikings’ offense, which shot 20-33 (60.6%) in the first half, began to pull away, going on a 19-10 run to end the period. A Temitope Bailey (West Springfield, Mass.) bucket and foul shot gave Salem State a 43-30 advantage before Joseph, who had 11 points in the half, answered for the Owls. Murray and Bryan sandwiched three-pointers around a Joseph basket to help the Vikings build a 16-point halftime lead.

Healy and Santos, who went a combined 7-8 (87.5%) from the field, each had nine points for Salem State while Murray finished the half with eight. The Vikings did most of their damage in the paint scoring 30 points from close range. The Owls shot 15-34 (44.1%) for the half.

The second half saw 27 fouls called as the two teams combined for 59 free throws in the game. Murray and Bryan, who combined to shoot 9-13 (69.2%), including 5-6 (83.3%) from three-point range, each had 15 second half points, helping Salem State maintain a double-digit lead. A three-pointer pulled the Owls to within 64-54 with 14:05 left, but the Vikings quickly built the lead to 18 as Lindland, who had 10 points for the game, scored five straight points, including his second three, that increased the lead to 73-55 with just over 12 minutes remaining. A free throw by Santos gave Salem State its largest lead, 101-76 with 4:26 left as Westfield State could not get closer than 21 points the rest of the way.

Healy finished with 13 points, nine rebounds and four blocks while Santos chipped in with 12 points and six assists. Rayshaw Matthews (Boston, Mass.) had seven points and six assists. Salem State’s bench outscored Westfield State’s 44-26 for the game.


Endicott Men’s Basketball Falls 

BIDDEFORD, Maine— The Endicott men’s basketball team was handed an 87-79 loss by the University of New England on Saturday afternoon at the Harold Alfond Forum. The Gulls were led by Joel Villa (Bronx, N.Y.) with 29 points (13-14 FG, 1-1 3PT, 2-3 FT), while Keith Brown (Pelham, N.H.) contributed 18 points and Matt McDevitt (Cumberland, Maine) had 11 points.

The majority of the game was back and forth, with five ties and 15 lead changes throughout. Endicott maintained a lead through most of the first half, going up by as many as eight at one point, but UNE was able to bring it to a one-point deficit heading into halftime. UNE ended up taking the lead for good with 9:09 left in the second half when Ryan Matthews (Park Ridge, N.J.) made three free throws. Endicott attempted to rally but the Nor’easters were able to secure an 87-79 victory.

BEYOND THE BOX SCORE
McDevitt led the team in rebounds with eight, while Villa, Brown, Joe Shehadi (Dorset, Vt.), and Rob O’Brien (Rindge, N.H.) each pulled down six.
Villa had a team-high six assists throughout the contest.
Mathew Catizone (Woburn, Mass.) and Vinny Clifford (Danvers, Mass.) recorded two blocks each.
Endicott held a slight 54-52 rebound advantage.
The Gulls are now 23-11 all-time against UNE.

Women’s College Basketball 

Salem State Falls to Westfield State

SALEM — Rebecca Sapouckey (Chicopee, Mass.) earned a double-double of 10 points and 11 rebounds and Lucy Barrett (Williamstown, Mass.) and Kierra McCarthy (Ludlow, Mass.) each added 15 points as Westfield State knocked off Salem State, 78-63 in Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference action on Saturday afternoon. The Owls improve to 10-6 and 4-0 in conference while the Vikings go to 7-11 and 3-2 in conference. Box Score

Westfield State’s press forced 38 turnovers which led to 31 points, which was highlighted by McCarthy’s six steals. The Owls shots just 29-82 (35.4%), but they took 22 more shots than the Vikings, which went 20-60 (33.3%) from the floor.

Kia Fernandes (Wareham, Mass.) topped Salem State with 19 points, and a career-high 19 rebound with six blocks while Norma Waggett (Saugus, Mass.) went for 15 points and seven boards. Tyra Scott (Methuen, Mass.) ended the game with 12 points and five rebounds, shooting 5-10 (50%) from the floor for the Vikings.

Waggett and Scott combined for Salem State’s first 14 points as the Vikings raced out to a 14-9 opening quarter lead. Two free throws by Courtney Paschal (Waltham, Mass.) gave the Vikings, who took advantage of poor shooting by Westfield State, a 16-11 advantage as the teams headed into the second quarter. The Owls struggled from the floor going just 5-for-22 (22.7%) and 1-for-8 (12.5%) from three point range.

Westfield State found their stroke to start the second, as back-to-back three’s by Melissa Gray (Peabody, Mass.) and Barrett put Westfield State quickly on top 17-16. Leading 23-21, Westfield State managed to build some distance with a 9-0 run. Barrett, who had eight points in the half, accounted for five points during the spurt as Westfield State led 32-21 with 2:52 remaining. However, six free throws by Fernandes over the final minute and a half helped reduce the deficit to 35-29 at halftime. Waggett led all scorers with 10 first half points for Salem State, which shot 10-27 (37.0%) for the half. The Owls forced 20 turnovers over the first twenty minutes, which accounted for 13 points.

The Vikings pulled to within two following a layup by Fernandes that made the score 39-37 with 6:27 left in the third. Two buckets and a free throw by McCarthy pushed the lead back to seven points as Westfield State was able to take a nine-point lead, 54-45 into the fourth following a trey by Chelsea Moussette (Southampton, Mass.).

Scott helped the Vikings cut the lead to three as she connected on a layup and subsequent free throw at the beginning of the fourth. Once again, the Owls responded, going on a 9-2 spurt to take control of the game, 65-53. Barrett and Moussette spearheaded the charge with consecutive three’s while Westfield State defense held the Vikings to one field goal for almost four minutes. The Owls held a double-digit lead the rest of the way to earn a 78-63 victory.


Endicott Women’s Basketball Loses at University of New England

BIDDEFORD, Maine – The Endicott women’s basketball team was handed a close 66-63 loss by the University of New England on Saturday afternoon in Harold Alfond Forum.UNE took a quick lead, but Endicott kept it close as the Nor’easters held a slight 16-11 lead after the first quarter of play.

The Gulls upped the pressure and brought the score to within two points (28-26) heading into halftime. The Nor’easters accumulated a ten point cushion throughout the third period to lead 48-38 by the end of the third frame.

Endicott attempted a late rally in the last minute of the fourth quarter but fell just short as UNE held onto the 66-63 victory. Cassandra Stapelfeld (Brookline, N.H.) led all scorers with 22 points, while Hannah Kiernan (Wenham, Mass.) was close behind with 16.

BEYOND THE BOX SCORE
Kaleigh Putnam (Wallingford, Conn.) also had a double-digit scoring effort as she recorded 12 points.
Kiernan led the team in rebounds with 13.
Gabriella Coppola (Watertown, Mass.) dished out five assists throughout the game.

Men’s College Hockey

Salem State Skates to a Tie vs. Fitchburg State 

SALEM – Salem State and Fitchburg State skated to a 0-0 tie in a Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference matchup on Saturday afternoon at Rockett Arena. Goalies Kirby Saari (Cape Elizabeth, Maine) and Jason Pucciarelli (Newmarket, Ontario) turned away all 75 shots as each recorded their first shutout.

The Falcons go to 9-5-2 and 4-4-2 in conference while the Vikings are now 7-8-2 and 4-6-1 in the league.

Salem State controlled the puck over the first two periods, outshooting Fitchburg State 29-12.  However, the Vikings were unable to capitalize on six power play opportunities and the teams entered the third tied 0-0.

Scoring chances were limited in the final and overtime periods. Despite being outshot 47-28 the Falcons managed to earn the tie. Saari made 47 saves while Pucciarelli stopped 28 shots.


Endicott Men’s Hockey Wins Big

BEVERLY – The No. 2/2 Endicott men’s ice hockey team routed Nichols College, 7-1, in a conference matchup on Saturday night at Raymond J. Bourque Arena. Tonight’s victory came as a direct response to yesterday’s 6-1 loss to the Bison on the road.

Joseph Slovak (South Yarmouth, Mass.) led the Gulls in his first game back from injury with two goals – including the game-winner. Thomas Daniels (St. Louis, Mo.), Logan Day (Seminole, Fla.), Daniel Kucerovy (Bethel Park, Pa.), Ross Olsson (Billerica, Mass.), and Jack Kilty (Medway, Mass.) all added solo tallies in the win.

Meanwhile, Vincent Crivello (Rosemere, Quebec) notched the lone goal for the Bison at the 18:10 mark of the second period on feeds from J.B. Baker (Columbia, Md.) and Oliver Arnberg (Nynashamn, Sweden).

Endicott goaltender Justin Ketola (Esko, Minn.) finished with a game-high 23 saves in the win (7-1-2), while Colin Brennan (Chester, N.J.) suffered the loss (7-4-2) on 17 saves in 41:55 of action. Backup netminder Henry Burns (Camillus, N.Y.) made 16 saves in 18:02 of play in the third period.

Women’s Ice Hockey

Endicott Tops Trinity 4-2

BEVERLY – Jade Meier’s (Fairbanks, Alaska) seventh goal of the season at the 12:41 mark of the third period proved to be the game-winner as the No. 10 Endicott women’s ice hockey team defeated Trinity, 4-2, on Saturday afternoon at Raymond J. Bourque Arena.

Meier delivered the game-winner late in the third when she punched home a rebound off a Courtney Walpole (Allen, Texas) shot from the slot that trickled free near the left post. Jillian Gibbs (Burlington, Vt.) also received an assist on the tally as the sophomore forward slid a pass to Walpole into the slot from behind the left side of the net.

After taking the lead, Endicott then killed off one power play by Trinity (nine shots total). Vendela Jonsson (Linkoping, Sweden) was also forced to make eight saves down the stretch, while the defense blocked five more to preserve the win.

Jonsson finished with 15 saves – including nine alone in the third period – to improve to (11-2-1) on the year. Her counterpart, Sydney Belinskas (Port Orange, Fla.) turned away 37 shots in the loss (2-8-0).

BEYOND THE BOX SCORE
With today’s win, Endicott evened up the all-time series at 2-2-0.
The Gulls have won the last two games in the series (1/20/17; W, 2-1 OT | 1/20/18; W, 3-2).
Ashlie Jones (Billerica, Mass.), Gibbs and Caroline Hughes (Andover, Mass.) all scored in the win for Endicott. Jones buried her fifth of the season in the second, while Gibbs and Hughes (empty-netter) both found the back of the net in the third.
Walpole had two assists in the game, which came on the game-tying and game-winning markers and won a game-high 10 faceoffs.

Salem State Women’s Hockey Wins

CANTON, NY – Vanessa VanBuskirk scored the game-winner with 1 minute 29 seconds left in overtime to lift visiting Salem State University to a 3-2 win over the SUNY Canton women’s hockey team on Saturday afternoon. The Roos (7-8-1) took a 1-0 lead when Ashley Gillies scored her third goal in two games picking off a pass at the offensive blue line and beat Sarah Plourde across the face of goal off the left post and in. Salem held a 10-8 shots advantage as the Roos led by a goal after one period.

Canton doubled their lead at 9:01 of the second on the power play. Tess Adams fed the puck from the bottom of the left circle to Micayla Macintyre on the right side of the point. She hit Whitney Bernier below the right circle and the puck deflected across the crease where Adams put home her 10th goal of the season.

Casie Curtin got the Vikings (2-11-2) on the board at 12:35 of the third as she beat Kristen Caporusso over the blocker after Kylie Currier freed the puck along the near-boards.

The Roos were then whistled for a pair of minor penalties with 5:26 remaining creating a 5-on-3 power play for Salem State and they converted 26 seconds later. Curtin played the puck across the crease to Jacqueline Sindoris who put home her first goal of the season. Kylie Currier also earned a helper on the play.

Canton was whistled for another penalty with 2:04 remaining but the Roos penalty kill came up big as the teams skated to overtime. With 3:12 left in the extra session the Roos were called for an interference penalty giving the Viking power play another chance.

Salem State was whistled for a penalty to even play at 4-on-4 but with 1:40 remaining Canton took another penalty giving the Vikings a 4-on-3. Just 11 seconds later Salem State converted the game-winner as Danielle Kelley won the faceoff back to Catherine Salvetti who swung the puck to VanBuskirk to her right who went top shelf for the win.

Caporusso made 23 saves for the Roos, while Plourde turned aside 21 shots for the Vikings.


Men’s Volleyball

Endicott Volleyball Wins vs. Wilkes University

ROCHESTER, N.Y. – The Endicott men’s volleyball team downed Wilkes University (3-0) and St. John Fisher (3-0) on Saturday evening to remain undefeated on the season (3-0).

ENDICOTT 3, WILKES 0 (25-9, 25-19, 25-20)
Bryn Lipton (Rockford, Ill.) posted 10 kills and also added three solo blocks and two assisted blocks to highlight the Gulls in their first match of the day. Troy Riorden (Fairport, N.Y.) and Gabe Felicetti (Charlestown, R.I.) chipped in with seven kills each, while Tim Fieseler (Bridgewater, N.J.) compiled six kills, one assisted block and a dig.

Meanwhile, the trio of Adam Dake (Victor, N.Y.), Devin Racey (Voorheesville, N.Y.), and Chad Riorden (Fairport, N.Y.) facilitated the attack with 14, 15, and 14 assists, respectively.

ENDICOTT 3, ST. JOHN FISHER 0 (25-23, 25-18, 25-15)
T. Riorden guided the Gulls with his first double-double of the season on 10 kills and 11 digs.

Jeremy Doski (Sandy Hook, Conn.) also factored into the win with seven kills on 11 swings (.545 hitting percentage), while Donovan Dey (Fairport, N.Y.) hammered home nine kills on 19 swings (.368).Other offensive highlights for Endicott included Dake’s match-high 15 assists and six kills from Seth Braquet (Destrehan, La.).

Defensively, Ryan Healy (Fair Lawn, N.J.) produced 10 digs and went 12-for-12 on serve-receive. Lipton also went a perfect 17-for-17 on serve-receive, while T. Riorden was 20-for-20.

Lastly, Endicott’s win against St. John Fisher featured 18 ties and seven lead changes.

Endicott (3-0) will play Baruch (4 PM) and Hunter (6 PM) on Friday, January 26 and Mt. St. Vincent (9:30 AM) on Saturday, January 27 on the campus of Johnson & Wales University.
