Salem State Men’s Basketball Beats Bridgewater State

SALEM ––  Shaquan Murray (Boston, Mass.) poured in 16 points and added seven rebounds and Alex Santos (Lawrence, Mass.) converted two free throws with six seconds left that gave Salem State a four-point lead as the Vikings held on for an 85-79 win over Bridgewater State in MASCAC action on Wednesday evening. The Vikings have now won seven games in a row and improve to 14-3 on the season and remain unbeaten in conference (4-0). The Bears slide to 9-7 and are 2-1 in league play. Boxscore

The Vikings overcame a 19-point effort from Rocky DeAndrade (Mansfield, Mass.), who scored 14 in the second half to lead five players in double-digits for Bridgewater State.

The first half was tightly contested as Salem State managed to take a four-point lead into the half. Bridgewater State pulled ahead 13-10 following a three-pointer by Dimitri St. Louis (Brockton, Mass.). The teams traded baskets before consecutive trey’s by Tyreik McCauley (Worcester, Mass.) and Jacob Lindland (Hamilton, Mass.) gave Salem State a 26-21 lead midway through the half. Thirty first half fouls caused both squads to go to their bench as the two teams combined for 36 free throws before the break. With the score tied 29-all, Salem State went on a 9-1 run, scoring eight of the points from the free throw line. The Bears battled back as five straight points by Ryan Carney (Easton, Mass.) brought Bridgewater State to within two at 39-37 with 2:43 left. Lindland, who had nine first half points, answered for the Vikings with two three-pointers over the final two minutes, as Salem State went up by seven before Nick Crocker (East Falmouth, Mass.) connected from behind the arc to pull the Bears to within four, 48-44 at the half.

McCauley had nine points at the break while Rayshaw Matthews (Boston, Mass.) added eight. Carney had 15 points on 5-of-8 shooting for the Bears, while Rayshon Ward (Plymouth, Mass.) had eight points and five rebounds for the Bears, who shot 43.8% (14-32) in the first half.

The Vikings built a seven-point, second half advantage, but DeAndrade quickly cut the lead to one with back-to-back three’s that brought the deficit to 66-65 with 10:08 remaining. DeAndrade, who went 5-for-7 from behind the arc, gave the Bears the lead 70-68 with his fourth trey of the half.

Leading 77-74 after another three by St. Louis, the Bears stumbled over the final 4:44, as they converted just once down the stretch as the team turned the ball over seven times while being unable to set up offensively against the Vikings’ relentless defense. Murray, who went 6-of-8 from the floor in the second half, took over late, converting eight straight points for the Vikings. Murray’s layup with 3:19 left put Salem State back on top for good 78-77 as Bridgewater State failed to answer a 6-0 Vikings’ run. A layup by DeAndrade made the score 80-79 with :48 seconds left, but a free throw by Matthews and turnover by the Bears allowed Santos to ice the game with two free throws as the Vikings held on for the 85-79 victory.

McCauley had 15 points for Salem State while Drew Healy (Lowell, Mass.) contributed with 14 points and 12 rebounds. Matthews added 11 points for Salem State, which shot 28-71 (39.4% for the game and forced 20 Bridgewater State turnovers.

Carney had 17 points for the Bears who also received strong efforts from Carty – 11 points, 13 rebounds and St. Loius -13 points. Ward ended the game with 12 points and five assists for Bridegwater State, which shot 29-36 (46.0%) from the floor and 13-18 (72.2%) from the free throw line, all of which came in the first half.


Salem State Women’s Basketball Wins  

SALEM —  Kia Fernandes (Wareham, Mass.) scored a game-high 18 points and added 12 rebounds while providing a key block in the final seconds as Salem State escaped with a 41-39 victory over Bridgewater State on Wednesday evening at Twohig Gymnasium. The Vikings improve to 7-10 and 3-1 in the Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference (MASCAC) while the Bears go to 4-11 and 1-2 in conference. Boxscore

Leading 41-39, Salem State’s Fernandes blocked an attempted put back by Kayla Carter (Beverly, Mass.) as time expired to preserve the win. The Vikings held on despite scoring just four points on 2-of-10 (20%) shooting in the fourth. Norma Waggett (Saugus, Mass.) chipped in with eight points and five rebounds for the Vikings.

Salem State raced out to a 17-2 lead in the first quarter, taking advantage of five Bridgewater State turnovers while shooting a blistering 61% from the field over the first seven minutes. Fernandes, who had 10 first half points and eight rebounds, scored eight points during the run. Kailyn Aguiar’s (Acushnet, Mass.) layup and subsequent free throw cut into the deficit for the Bears as the Vikings exited the quarter with a 17-7 lead. Back-to-back three’s by Nicole Bostick (Bridgewater, Mass.) and Sara DaSilva (Chelmsford, Mass.) to open the second drew Bridgewater State to within four points, but the Bears once again went cold from the floor, as they scored just one basket over the final 6:57 allowing Salem State to build a 28-15 halftime advantage. Waggett scored all eight of her points in the first half for the Vikings, which shot 46.2% (12-26) from the field, including 16 points in the paint. DaSilva led Bridgewater State with five points as the Bears converted only 6-of-26 attempts (23.1%) before haftime.

Salem State maintained a double-digit lead in the third quarter despite seven points from Bridgewater State’s Chanelle Melton (Brockton, Mass.). A jumper by Katie McDonnell (Swansea, Mass.) gave Salem State its largest lead at 35-20 with 2:16 left in the third quarter before a layup by Melton and a three-pointer by DaSilva made the score 35-25. However, McDonnell answered again for Salem State, allowing the Vikings to enter the fourth with a 37-25 lead.

Following a basket by Fernandes with 5:10 left in the fourth, Salem State did not score again, giving the Bears an opportunity to slowly reduce the deficit. Jennifer Whyte (Braintree, Mass.) and Aguair combined for eight straight points, pulling Bridgewater State to within four at 39-35 with 5:37 remaining. Whyte continued to remain hot as her ninth point of the quarter brought Bridgewater State to within two, 41-39 with 1:46 left. Neither team could convert in the final minute, as Carter came up short, ending Bridgewater’s State’s comeback bid.

Melton and Whyte each finished with nine points and combined for nine rebounds, while DaSilva added eight. The Bears, which finished 27.6% (16-58) from the field finished with 17 turnovers, which all came in the first half.


Endicott Women’s Hockey Falls at Norwich

NORTHFIELD, Vt. – The No. 10 nationally-ranked Endicott women’s ice hockey team was handed a 4-1 loss by No. 2/3 Norwich on Wednesday evening. Both teams got several good looks on net in the beginning of the first period, but the Cadets ultimately struck first to take a 1-0 lead on a goal from Amanda Conway (Methuen, Mass.).

Norwich opened the second frame with a tally from Nicole Goebel (Saskatoon, Saskatchewan) to extend the lead to 2-0.The Gulls, however, cut the deficit to 2-1 when Lauren Ferraiuolo (North Haven, Conn.) tallied her fourth goal of the season at the 14:48 mark. Ferraiuolo gathered the puck after a faceoff and took a hard shot from the point which sailed past Norwich netminder, Laurie King (Waddington, N.Y.).

Adrieana Rossini (Malden, Mass.) found the back of the net in the closing minutes of the second period to give the Cadets a 3-1 lead.Endicott goaltender, Vendela Jonsson (Linkoping, Sweden) came up with several huge saves in the third period to keep the game close but Rossini was able to score an empty-net goal with less than one minute remaining in regulation to secure the 4-1 victory for Norwich.

Jonsson made 33 saves in net and shifted to 10-2-1 on the season with the loss.

Caroline Hughes (Andover, Mass.) assisted on Ferraiuolo’s goal.
Ferraiuolo led the offense with four shots, while Jade Meier (Fairbanks, Alaska) was close behind with three.
The Gulls’ goal came on the powerplay.
