Navigators welcome Southern Connecticut State Pair

LYNN — Connecticut will again be represented on the North Shore Navigators’ roster, as it was announced on Tuesday that Southern Connecticut State University pitcher Brandon Rentas and infielder Robert Schryver will join the Futures Collegiate Baseball League club for the 2018 season.

They become the fourth and fifth members announced to the 2018 squad, joining catcher Dominic Keegan (Vanderbilt) and pitchers Steven Hajjar (Michigan) and Devin O’Donovan (Austin Peay), whose signings were announced earlier this month in conjunction with the team’s new partnership with SHOW Baseball Academy.

“We’re excited to continue building our 2018 roster with the additions of Brandon and Robert,” said Navigators general manager Bill Terlecky. “Their collegiate experience will be valuable to the team, and I look forward to watching them compete this year.”

Rentas was named to the Northeast-10 All-Rookie Team after going 4-4 with a 2.93 ERA in 11 starts in 2016. The Wallingford, Conn., native finished tied for second on the Owls with 40 strikeouts over a team-high 76.2 innings pitched that season and was the only pitcher on the team to complete multiple games. He missed 2017 after undergoing Tommy John surgery.

Schryver, a member of the Northeast-10 Commissioner’s Honor Roll, did not play for the Owls in 2017 after spending his first two collegiate seasons at Franklin Pierce and the University of Bridgeport. In 2016, he hit .247 with 10 RBI in 27 games at Bridgeport. He was a three-time All-State selection at Ansonia High School in Connecticut.

Schryver and Rentas become just the second and third-ever members of the Owls to play for North Shore and the first since 2010. Led by Tim Shea, who enters his 16th season as head coach in 2018, SCSU finished last spring with a 27-16-1 overall record and earned an at-large bid to the NCAA Division II East Regional.

The Navigators will be announcing more additions to the roster in the coming weeks and months in preparation for the 2018 season.
