Navigators Fall Friday Night at Fraser Field

By Gabbi Riggi

Martha’s Vineyard blitzed the North Shore for a sixth run ninth inning to break open an otherwise quiet game Friday, taking it by a 7-2 final.

Luke Johnson lead off the ninth with a single to right, and Clarke worked a full count walk to get aboard. After a long at-bat Hardaman worked a single against reliever Chris Pennell (St. Thomas Aquinas). Gray lofted a sacrifice fly deep to center field to tie the game. Frampton earned a four pitch walk to keep the bases loaded for Trey Pearce with two outs.

Pearce skied a popup straight up that looked to end the inning. Instead the ball fell in front of the mound between the corner infielders and pitcher after Pennell was called off the play, allowing two runs across.

The bases remained loaded for Kiambu Fentress who would come around the bases on a single to left that would roll through the left fielder and to the outfield wall. Frampton, Pearce and Fentress would come across to score the finishing runs.

All Star starting pitcher Austen Michel (Dartmouth) was bright as ever on the Fraser Field mound, striking out six in 5 2/3 innings and allowing only four hits. Despite his strength, the Sharks converted a pair of those hits for a run. Leading off the third inning Blake Frampton tripled and was brought in as Fentress grounded to second, pulling the infield back enough to score the run.

The Sharks held the lead through to the sixth inning when the Navigators bats started to generate offense with two outs. Joey Pena (St. Thomas Aquinas) popped a single to shallow left and whirled to second for a double.

Austin Masel (Holy Cross) skipped a ground ball single into right, bringing in Pena as the tying run. Masel stretched a lead at first into scoring position on a swinging strike by Nick Falkson (Tufts) and scored on a base hit to right field. The Navigators were unable to scramble a rally in the bottom of the ninth, falling to 16-22 on the year.

Martha’s Vineyard, now sitting with a 19-20 record, returns to Fraser Field to face off against the Navs on Sunday. First pitch for the game is at 5pm.
